The topic of fundraisers is coming up. Everyone loves fundraisers right. So, we wanted to see which ones you guys liked and which ones you didn't. If you don't mind, think back to all of those wonderful times and tell us where you made money and where you just made folks crazy.

Hi. We still need volunteers. Adult volunteers. (Nothing personal, young adult people out there, but after all, you will be bandcamping, right?

Moms, dads, grandparents, other fine related, caring, responsible, compassionate and sympathetic kind people, this is a call to service so to speak.

Mostly, we need help on Wednesday to assist with auditions. The job is easy, you send the stressed-out teenager into the room, you queue them when to leave the room. You make sure the next stressed-out teen is ready to go then you repeat.

If you can offer your valuable assistance on Wednesday, or any day of bandcamp, please give Shelley a call or email her at lvaband@lvaband.com. Her contact info is on the APM page.

Help!!! Again.

Hey there. I got so distracted by movies, that I forgot to post what I actually came here to post. Actually, in all fairness, Mr. Biles was suppooooosed to write this blog entry but.....alas, what can I say.

Anyway, the band directors can use some help from any upperclassmen who want to volunteer their time.

On July 29th from 10-2 the band directors will be at LVA getting the band room ready. I recently saw the band room. Believe me. It is not ready. If you want to help, just show up with a smile and be sure you have your deodorant on. Oops. Did I say that outloud? The information is also on the Events page under news. Check it out.

Last Call for Band Camp forms and moneys.

Okay people...yeah you. We are still missing a handful of band camp forms. That is a problem for a number of reasons, namely our inability to accurately decide on how much food to buy if we don't know how many folks are coming.

What can you do to help?

Why thanks for asking. Send in your forms, harass your friends and kindly remind your parents. Do whatever it takes to make sure we know you are coming. Also, if you know for sure that you are not coming, or that someone you know is not coming, please drop us an email, call us or contact one of the band directors to let them know.

Band Shirt Contest

Band shirts, band camp and band clean-up.

Guess I have band on the brain. First, a few announcements:

Band room clean-up tomorrow (Wednesday July 29th) from 10 - 2. Bring scrubs and water.

Band camp starts next Wednesday. Be sure you know when your audition time is. Be there or be...just be there.

The first ever band shirt contest is about to begin. I (God willing) will have a flier up soon with the rules and other boring details. We have some good ideas so far. Band geek won out hands down over band nerd, so we will go with a band geek theme. Check the comments on the first announcement for some other thoughts. I will collect a list of all of the awards the band has won so you can use that too. Actually, I think I will put it on the website. Good thinking whoever you were with that great idea.

In other news, don't wait until the day of band camp to tell us you have transportation problems. Call one of the directors right now so he/they can help you work them out.

Parents, if you are able to come help, we sure can use you. Let Shelley know when you can be there by giving her a call or dropping her an email.

First, thanks to everyone that came in to help on Wednesday. Way to lead by example!!! We have one more opportunity for people to help out. On Tuesday, August 4th, we need humans from 9am - noon. If you are able to come, leave a comment or just show up. We will not turn anyone away.

As a special incentive, I will give a free band-camp snack to anyone who wears long, blue pants. Blue jeans do not count, only long blue pants.

Band Geek T-shirt Contest

Okay. The flyer is here. The contest is launched. It is time to show us your mad designing skills and come up with a T-shirt that tells the world you are PROUD to be a Band Geek.

The contest ends September 25th. The entries will be posted anonymously and you will get to be the judge.

T-shirts can be short sleeved designs, long sleeved designs or hoodies. You can incorporate any part of the shirt you want, but remember, the more space that is covered, the more the shirt will cost.

Also keep in mind that we will be silk-screening these designs. That means tiny details will not show up when they are printed.

The official flyer is over on the paperwork page as are some templates you can use for your design if you choose. You can also just draw them out.

I am excited to see what you come up with. The only rules are that the shirt must follow CCSD guidelines and must have the words Band Geek on it somewhere.

Ready? Get set. GO!!

Don't bother with the spelling lesson. I was just playing around with words there. Anyway, on to this exciting bit of news. Hopefully Mr. Biles will weigh in on this because the message I got was a bit cryptic.

Here's the deal. Apparently "BRI" Bernstein has advanced to the final 40 acts on America's Got Talent (NBC). That is amazing! That means BRI rose to the top of more than 200,000 auditions. Hello! Are you people listening to this? One of our very own students made it through to the TOP 40 on America's Got Talent.

BRI will be performing live on some unknown Tuesday this month (jump in here Mr. Biles!) and the audience will vote on who goes into the finals.

Her BIO will be posted on the official America's Got Talent website (http://www.nbc.com/americas-got-talent) and will include the words...ready?..."proud member of the Las Vegas Academy Band-Philharmonic". It isn't there yet, but keep checking back.

Also, her original audition is posted on the official AGT website under videos. Here is what you need to do. Go to the second page, be amazed and then post supportive comments. Show America (and the rest of the world) that LVA knows how to REPRESENT!! Be sure to check Youtube also. We need to get the word out and support one of our own.

No excuses. Get our there and show your LVA pride!!!

And it's Audition Time....

You aren't nervous are you? Of course not.

Tomorrow, you will start in the cafeteria with check-in. From there, you can go warm up in the gym. Please be standing at the door to your audition room 10-15 minutes prior to your audition time.

Don't panic.

Remember, no talking during your audition. A parent volunteer will be there to escort you in and out of the room.

Keep not panicking as you strut your stuff for the judges and then calmly exit the judging area.

Once you are free and clear of the judging area, away from other students and not driving, you are free to panic.

For those Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy fans out there...don't forget your towel.

Post Audition Post

Okay, Auditions are over and you all survived. No. Really. Everyone survived. It was great to see everyone and I hope that there are now more of you reading this. Do me a favor. Post a comment so I know you are out there. Just do a soandso says hi type thing.

For tomorrow...

Bring water bottles. We will have water and lemonade again, but you will want to take it with you.

Bring your instruments. We got some questions about that, so I am posting it here.

If you haven't paid for band camp yet, come anyway. You need to be here. We will square up later.

You will get your packets and tags tomorrow. You will find out what band you are in on Saturday. Cruel, I know.

Parents, there will be a meet and greet tomorrow morning at 8:30. We would love to see you. That one is optional though. There is a mandatory parent meeting. All parents are asked to attend one of those meetings. One is tomorrow afternoon and the other is Friday morning. Also, there will be an APM parent social on Saturday morning while your children are getting ready for the concert. We would really like to see all of you there. If you want to bring a breakfast item, that would be fine. If not, that is fine too. We have already heard some great ideas and would like to hear what everyone has to say.

For our new parents, welcome to LVA!!

Oh. I almost forgot. We have a date for Bri's performance. I added it to the calendar too. Be sure to watch AGT on August 18th and support our own uber cool top 40 talented Bri. There should probably be some commas in there, huh?

If you could see us, the ladies and gentlemen of APM are wiping our brows. Boy that was a lot of work, but you folks are all worth it.

Wow. What a great concert. Every year LVA students shock and amaze with their performance after only two days of practice. It never gets old.

And now...band camp pictures. They are being held hostage. If you want to see them, you have to go vote on Mr. Biles' blog. That goes for parents and students alike! See you over there.

Not the easiest process, let me tell you. I guess if Facebook and Amazon can go down, so can we. But I can still whine about it!

Anyway, as you may have noticed, the website was down for a bit and then after they got it back up it was slower than a three legged turtle pushing a rock up a hill. So...I didn't get all of the pics up. Actually, I didn't get most of the pics up. I have been at it all day and I quit. I shall press forth tomorrow.

If you notice the slideshow is missing from the website, that is just me loading pics. Check back in a bit.

If you have some pics you want up on the website, email them to us.

Also, we are working hard hard hard on that directory for you.

About the band directory...

There are some unnecessary concerns and some other very valid concerns regarding the upcoming and in progress band directory. This blog is an official shout out to all of those band parents out there. That means if you are a band geek, you need to go get your band geek parents and ask them to comment on this blog. (help them if needed *grin*)

Okay. First and foremost, student emails will not be listed on the actual directory, so fear not. We agree completely. That would not be prudent. We will send emails to your students just like last year, so if that is not okay, be sure to let us know ASAP. However, I am guessing that you wouldn't have given us those emails if it were not okay.

Secondly, the directory will be distributed via email. It will not be posted on the website. The first copy will be a rough draft. You will have the opportunity to fix all of my mistakes. (However, we could talk about some of your handwriting...). After I make all of the changes, you will get your first semester copy. We will update it and send out a new directory during the second semester.

Now for the shout out. Do you want the addresses included? We will have the area of town included, but I don't see any reason to include the actual addresses on the published directory. Thoughts?

So I am having a bit of trouble with the calendar program. It is, shall we say particular about how it wants the dates entered. Grrrr. Some things are overlapping right now. Don't send us a bunch of emails pointing that out just yet. I know about them, I am just too annoy...erm, tired to fix them right now.

However, please do to let us know about any spelling errors you might come across. Yesterday, the h kept disappearing from the word symphony every time I typed it. Can't explain it. If you see a mistake, please drop us a line and we will take care of it. Feel free to include a nice word at the same time to boost our spirits :D

Last Night's Concert!

Wow!!! What can I say? Wow and even WOW! That was sooo good. You guys are just amazing. I have to tell you that every concert I absolutely sure I cannot be more impressed and then you go and impress me some more. How is that even possible? If I could some how bow in awe on a blog, I would. Consider me bowing. Awe...awe...awe.

As a side note...it was kind of fun to watch those V3 percussionists sweating it on that first number. It must have had some tricky bits. I am clueless, but you percussionists looked pretty darned focused!

And how about those two guest artists? Were they amazing or what? Was it hard to play along with the speaking part? I can't imagine.

Okay. More bowing. More awe.

Parents, give your kids a hand here.

By the way, I am sorry I got so behind on the board. I will do MUCH better!!!

The Auction is coming...the auction is coming...!

I have been having some issue with the site these last couple of days. For reasons unknown, the graphics don't want to load and for reasons you don't want to hear I don't have the patience to fight with them.

So.

When one or both of those problems resolve themselves, you will start seeing some of the things that will be coming in the silent auction this Fall. Stay tuned and start collecting your donations. This year's auction is going to be great!

The last band meeting...

Was short and sweet, the best kind. Here is the low down:

1 - The holiday season is coming. Who knew. That means it is time to start gathering baskets and donations for the draffle (CCSD does not allow raffles) and the silent auction. Please send in your donations as soon as possible and the directors and Ms. Camuglia will organize them.

2 - V1, V2 and V3 will be having a competition to see who can sell the most tickets for their band basket. Details to follow.

3 - Mr. Downey gave some info on the V3 trip. They will be going to California. Details to follow. The cost will be in the $500 ball-park

4 - Bread bowls and chili will be served at the December concert. Yay! Want to cook some Chili? Contact Shelley.

5 - We will be decorating the Lowden for the hollidays. We would love your help. December 1st is the big day right after school.

6 - Look for pre-order forms to come home on sweatshirts.

And that was it. So. How are things with all of you?

Oh My Goodness!!! Can I just say it one more time? OH MY GOOODNESSSSSSS!!! That was an amazing concert. It was all I could do to not jump up and yell. I kid you not. You guys were wonderful. And what an amazing turn out. Way to go parents.

I could go on and on and on, but I won't. It would be okay if you did though. Some comments are sure welcomed. Just one more thing though. Thanks so very much for all of the help and support and donations for the food and baskets and auction items. Way to support your kids. We have the best parents ever. I am sure of it.

There is a lot going on these days, but the blog has been awfully quiet. Is everyone excited to see the Bliss concert? What an opportunity! And the V3 trip to LA should be tons of fun.

We didn't get a lot of feedback on the design for the hoodie, so I hope everyone is okay with it. We will be rolling it out pretty soon. We will also be giving everyone a couple of choices for next year's band shirts so keep an eye out for that. Pics will be posted here on the website and in the band room.

Finally, the banquet approacheth (yes, I just made that word up). Talk to your band council.

Festival and Band trips

Holy Cats. Was the V3 festival performance amazing or what? Rumor is the judges were quite impressed. Just rumors of course. Perhaps one of the directors could clear things up a bit?

The V3 band trip is right around the corner. The itenerary is posted. Looks like three days of shlogging through rehearsals, sectionals and challenging..even rigorous group events. There will no doubt be ups and downs. Possibly even rounds and rounds. Any V3 parents who would like to help the children stave off starvation by sending in food donations for the bus ride up and back are pre-thanked and encouraged to send teen friendly pre-packaged items to the bandroom by Monday March 22nd.

Now is a good time to shout out what is considered a teen friendly food. Apples right? Post it in the comments section.

APM Board Nominations

So it is time for APM board elections. They are open to any parent/guardian with a student in any band at LVA. New voices are very welcome. The current board positions are:

President: Now held by Shelley Miller

Vice President: Now held by Melonie Medellin

Secretary: Now held by Susan VanBeuge

Treasurer: Now held by Marla Kahan

Historian: Now held by Docia Nielsen

If you want to re-nominate/elect a current board member, just drop an email stating your wishes. If you want to nominate a new voice to a position, shoot us a name and we will add it to the line up.

Believe me when I tell you when it comes to our APM and our kids, the more really is the merrier!

If you want your nomination to be anonymous, then you are also welcome to send it in to Ms. Camuglia via a band student. She will get it to the right people and we will get it on the list.

Nominations close April 22nd. We will post the lists for voting April 23rd.

We are weeks away from band camp. Hard to believe, right? It's true. I hope you haven't waited until now to dig out that music and start practicing.

Here are some things you should know:

1) Your registration was due eons ago. We have to order shirts. If you didn't send in our registration form, we will be guessing your size. If you don't like the way that sounds, get in touch with Shelley ASAP!!! or sooner.

2) Audition times have been posted. Look on the paperwork page. Click on the band page then click on your instrument. We posted them as word files and as excel files. If you can't open either of those file types, call one of the LVABB members and we will let you know when your sweat time, I mean audition time is.

3) We can't wait to see you all in August. It's been sort of quiet without you.

So...anyone looking forward to being back in school? Any exciting plans for the new year?

Band camp is over, the results are posted. You guys were AMAZING!!!! I mean like HOLY CATS AMAZING!! So impressive. Words don't describe what you all accomplished in two days.

A band student reported paranormal activity in the men's bathroom in Frazier. Apparently there were strange non-bathroom type noises. The REAL ghost hunters have been contacted, but have not called back yet.

Here it comes. School. I hope you all know it starts Monday. Yes. THIS Monday. As in...there aren't any more Mondays left in your Summer vacation.

Oh, stop whining. You know you can't wait to get back in there, see your friends, hit the books, start practicing for your juries, see your friends. Oops. Did I say that already?

Anyway, in case you didn't know or tried to forget, school starts at 7am. Bring your coffee and report to your homeroom. The rumor is your schedules are posted on Parentlink, but you won't go to your 1st period. Report to your homeroom.

You DON'T need your instruments on the first day. After the first day, the only excuse for forgetting your instrument is arriving at school by helicopter.

Okay. That's about it. Have fun and keep being amazing.

Hi! Hope everyone had a nice calm relaxing weekend because the work is about to start. Here are your updates.

*Band dress money is due 9/10. That would be $85

*Entertainment books/monies are due 9/24. Those books cost $30 and half goes right into your account. Get out there and get selling.

*An over-achieving student (we love those kind) is out there selling those entertainment books right across state lines. WOW! We uploaded an email explaining how to sell out of state entertainment books. And thank you to the parent and Ms. Camuglia for hunting that information down for us.

*Did you know you can get cool prizes selling those books? The flyer is on the web.

*The calendar is posted. The news and concert pages are current. It is a FULL schedule, so as that country guy says..."get 'er done!"

*V3 students are getting or have gotten a letter regarding the Bands of America trip to Indianapolis. The letter is also posted under band paperwork.

Lots of things due right now. I thought I would sum them up.

The $60 lab fee is due like...last week. Just an FYI, you don't pay it, you don't graduate.

The $85 dress fee is due like...last week. Girls only and only if you needed a new dress.

The first $200 V3 trip installment was due...last Friday. More to come. Sorry. But think of the fun, I mean the privilege and honor of being in Bands of America.

Hoodie money/orders were due...Friday. I am turning the order in on Monday, so if you flaked out, I mean missed out, call, don't email, one of the board members. No do-overs on this.

Hope to see everyone at Open House on Thursday night. Here is what's going on in the band cave:

1 - All entertainment book money should have been turned in by now.

2 - You can pick up chocolate candy bars to sell from Ms. Camuglia. It would be nice if it wasn't 102 degrees outside and they wouldn't melt, but what can you do?

3 - Open house is on the 30th...be there!

4 - Sweat shirt orders took a while to get in because folks kept sending us email changes and such, but we persevered and they are being printed. Fortunately, you won't be needing them for another week or so :)

5 - Letters are posted on the LVABB resource page that can be used for bribing...I mean requesting donations from businesses and such. PLEASE USE THESE LETTERS!! We need lots of help this year.

What an amazing concert!

Can you believe we filled the theatre? That's how it should be of course, but I still thought I should mention how good it looked. And what about all of the volunteers?? Wow.

So, we had great music and a great performance and fabulous food, but no pictures. If you have some fun pics of the kids at the concert, would you shoot those to us so we can post them? That would be fabulous.

Also, don't forget that peer reviews have to be done on music concerts this year. Don't run yourself out of concerts before you get yours done!

Honor Band Results

Hi guys!! Your winter concert was amazing, by the way. Congrats. I think I some pics coming.

Okay, so apparently 85 students made it into honor band, the highest number ever. Not that we should be surprised, but WOW!! Congratulations to everyone who made it in and to everyone who tried out. I am posting the results/placement list on the news page so you can all congratulate your friends.

Remember (as if you need reminding) school is out for two weeks starting this Friday. When you come back, you are basically slamming right into semester exams, so use your time wisely and have a great vacation.
